Description

A compact expedition of 8 days, starting and ending in Semera, we go straight to the heart of the Danakil desert and explore the active Erta Ale volcano with its new lava lake and the impressive Dallol hydrothermal fields!
After climbing to the volcanoes summit in the morning you meet a beautiful sunrise at the rim of the crater. Spending 2 days allow you to study the volcanoes craters and the new fissure eruption site on the volcano’s flank. After descending the volcano you travel onward to the Danakil Depression, where you spend about 2 days exploring the colorful hydrothermal deposits of Dallol, acid lakes, salt formations and camel caravans. At the end you will stay at Afdera Salt lake.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1

ARRIVAL TO SEMERA (CAPITAL CITY OF AFAR REGION)

Arrival to Semera, pick up at the Airport, transfer to the Hotel. After check in to your Hotel, we drive about 40Km as an excursion short sightseeing Tour and acclimatization of Afar Region Desert, with active Geothermal and volcanic ranges of Alelo Bad hot springs pools and hydrothermal deposits south of Manda Harraro. Day 2

SEMERA – ERTA ALE (300 KM)

After breakfast at the Hotel, we meet with Enku (your organizer and Guide) at your Hotel about 07:00 Am and proceed to Erta Ale Volcanic Field through the Old Danakil sea . Today you have a chance to see a glance of the fresh lava flow and tectonically affected mountain ranges. Both recent basalts of spreading Axes, recent sediments and Highland rock sequences dominate the road Geology of the area where you are driving through. Day 3

ASCENT TO ERTA ALE'S SUMMIT

Before sunrise we set off on the ca. 3 h ascend of Erta Ela. It is a relatively easy hike – about 10 km across the old lava flows that cover the flanks of the shield volcano, with a total elevation difference of ca. 500 m.
We arrive at the rim when first light comes up.
As part of our camel caravan already went ahead of us, breakfast will be ready by the time we arrive on the caldera rim. After setting up camp in the different Afar huts, the group reassembles for a guided walk down into the caldera which will take you along Erta Ale´s main volcanic features and viewpoints. Lunch upon our return, the rest of this day and night everyone is free to plan his/her relaxing, sleeping and summit caldera exploring
Day 4

DESCEND FROM ERTA ALE TO BASECAMP, DRIVE TO HAMED ELA

After a last short night camping on Erta Ale´s caldera rim we start our descend in the cooler hours of the early morning. As part of our camel caravan already left during the night, our breakfast awaits us at basecamp. By 4X4 jeeps we then travel to the area of Dallol and Lake Assale, driving along a quickly changing scenery from lava dessert to steppe, shortly climbing out of the Danakil depression onto the western highlands before heading back down into the Danakil to the Afar village of Hamed Ela. The afternoon / evening can be used to rest, have a semi-shower, explore Hamed Ela and observe the camel caravans passing through
Day 5

FULL DAY TO EXPLORE DALLOL AND SURROUNDINGS

As Hamed Ela is the hottest continuously inhabited location on the planet, we will focus on the cooler mornings and afternoons for our short expeditions, allowing for lunch and siesta during the midday heat. On the program are relatively short 4X4 jeep drives to Dallol hydrothermal system with its colourful deposit and small sources, and to the saline Assale Lake and the area where local people are cutting out the salt in the same traditional way their ancestors did
Day 6

ASSALE SALT LAKE - AFDERA

This day is reserved for the glistening plane of Assale salt lake, traditional salt cutting and camel loading, and the irregularly formed salt deposits and colourful acid ponds south of Dallol. In the afternoon we leave the Dallol area and drive to Afdera Lake.
Day 7

AFDERA SALT LAKE - SEMERA

After enjoying the Salt Lake we proceed the drive to Semera .Overnight at Semera
Day 8

FLIGHT ADDIS ABEBA AND BACK HOME OR EXTENSION

Fly back to Addis and take your international flight back home .
City tour in Addis Abeba can be organized for extra charge or extension program to Lalibela or Semien mountains
